Dangerous Dog Treats

Hypnotic DogIt’s the beginning of a bang em’ up holiday week. The Fourth Of July – just in case you didn’t know.  A time for family fun, food and dog treats.

As far as I can see, it’s going to be a problematic week at best, or at least that’s the way it is starting out.

First of all my therapist call yesterday and cancelled my appointment on Wednesday. Some vague excuse about being on vacation and the long holiday weekend. Right, so now I’m stuck for eleven days without having anyone to bark my problems to.

I was snooping around Mom’s desk this morning (teach her to put a cushy easy chair at the end of her desk) and found sticky notes about Titan’s yearly checkup, Titan’s shots, Titan’s grooming and Coco’s overnight visit. Okay, Coco’s visits are always fun, but the rest, I don’t think so. I tried to scrunch them up and push them into the trash can, but that didn’t work out so well.  Do you have any clue how hard it is to get a sticky note off you paws? Nope, I’m definitely not in charge of this long holiday weekend.

I did get a fun new present from Dad last Friday. A bird feeder and seed, for outside the window in Mom’s office. I wonder how many times I will scare the seed right out of those birds by charging the window from that chair.  The birds haven’t found the feeder yet. Seriously how dumb are they – a built in buffet hanging out in plain sight, and they are still pecking around the back yard for food.

why do dogs go in circles before they lay down

ST-circles-post-photoWhy do dogs go in circles before they lay down? Every night mom asks the same question.  One would think that after a few Elvis-inspired upper lip smirks and teeth showing she would get the hint not to ask anymore. Oh, no – things don’t go that easy around here.

When my cousin Coco comes over for a few overnights, she asks him the same question. Then there are the nights that my big sister Princess gets to sleep in…well you get the drift – question, question and, yet another question.

I do it five times (two for good measure), Coco does it three times and Princess does it a pawzillion times (she’s a Golden Retriever, need I say more?)

Since I am the really cute, adorable one, I do it as a matter of comfort. I understand from my elders that back in the day they had to go in circles (usually three times by-the-way) in order to mat down the grass, sticks and leaves for comfort. I’m all about comfort, as you can see by the pawonderful fuzzy blanket that my Aunt Judy sent for Christmas.

Princess tells me that her ancestors circled to claim the area as their territory before settling in for the night. She also said the circling behavior sent a message to other dogs so they would not cross into the circle during the night, like she would ever know – talk about snoring.

Coco say’s “a Poodle’s ancestors originally did it so they could rid the area of any snakes or biting creatures before they settled down for the night. He may act like a big dog but I knew he was a wimp at heart.

Mon said that during her research on the subject she found a couple of additional theories. One said that the circling allowed dogs to make sure there were no predators or intruders nearby. Another suggested that while circling they could test the wind to find any potential intruders and lay down facing that direction, allowing them to remain alert while sleeping.

One of my dad’s favorite subjects is the Earth’s magnetic field (huge eye roll and yawn from mom on this subject.)  So imagine his (and moms) surprise when Yahoo News featured a post by Chris Nichols asking why dogs circle. “Turns out it’s because they’re trying to align with the Earth’s magnetic field”, according to a report by researchers in the Czech Republic and Germany and published in the journal Frontiers in Zoology.

So while I circle for the night, you can ask your dog the same question. Let me know what the answer is – there seems to be several to choose from.

Looking Technology In The Eye – Or Not

DDD-IPWD-2

Sometimes you just have to look technology in the eye and be determined to beat it – no matter what. Right, that looks great in print, but coming from this household and computer it is a sheer miracle that the computer still works. Of course, Mom is only in month three of her newest computer.

Not to be out done, I got a iPaw’d for Valentines day so of course I had to do what Mom does – make a video. I did it! I made my first video. Granted it is only 27-seconds long, but it has a voice over (a rather embarrassing one at that) and all. It is being uploaded to You Tube right now and will go on my site later in the day.

Here is a sneak peek for you, titan-2

Let me tell you, this movie making thing is a lot of work, but fun. Mom says we can take all those photos  she has taken of my over the past year and make movies out of them. Gee, aren’t you thrilled? I know, a little goes a long way.

It’s been an interesting couple of weeks. Mom has been down and out with bronchitis and strep throat.  We just stayed in bed most of the time and slept. Then she made the mistake of downloading The Room, a killer and bark worthy video game for her iPad. That was the last anyone saw of her face until yesterday ( I really thought she was a genteel southern belle up until now.) Let me tell you, when it comes to not getting her way when it comes to that game, it can get scary really fast. Good thing she didn’t have a voice for eight days.

coco-siri-bed-1Cousin Coco has been here for two weeks while his Mom is in Florida. She will pick him up tomorrow night. We have had a romp and tumble good time. Mom says we are perpetual motion, whatever that means.

Wow, look at that photo of the two of us. Can you believe how much I have grown in a year?

Oh and to make things even more interesting, Dad passed a kidney stone (see if I ever eat  kidney beans again) last week. Geez, I didn’t know humans could make noises like that.

Between the video making, the voice over work and that game The Room, Mom and I have looked technology in the eye and won – for this week anyway.

Update: 3/26/2013

Great, I finally made it to YouTube and guess what? The sound on my video is not working. That is almost as embarrassing as having your Mom talk for you.

I Am In The Today’s Woman Magazine

What a day!  I made the magazine! The Today’s Woman magazine that is!  I am sooooo excited. At four months old I am in a published magazine. And what power that has around here.  We woke up to ringing phones and people asking, “did you see Siri’s write up in the magazine” or even better, “oh, Siri is soooo cute – I had no idea”. Yep…Siri and cute go paw and paw.

I’m hoping  the magazine Editor, Anita Oldham finds a puppy just like me, so she can enjoy the world of puppy-hood through her eyes. Mom has always said that Anita sees things that “we” will never see (it’s that creative mind of a magazine editor thing). I bet we puppies could show her a thing or two.  By the way, Anita, we are much better when we come in pairs, just thought I would let you know that! Thank you for letting me be a part of the magazine.

Ah…about that well-behaved comment…when you read some of the upcoming blog posts you will understand why that is not necessarily the case. Continue reading

Size Matters

I am 14-weeks old now and I have learned so much. The list is long, so I’ll go with the highlights.

  • Don’t pee on daddy’s shoes, especially when he is not wearing them. What can I tell you, the man is not into surprises.
  • Cousin Coco is such fun to play with. He lets me chew and bite all I want.
  • Big sister Princess on the other hand, is not much fun.
  • I’ve already fallen in love with Abby Gordon (she will most likely break my heart, but it feels great right now.)
  • My shadow does not stay in one place and is very hard to play with.
  • My attention span is still the size of a gnat…or six stern Titan’s and one Sir Titan!
  • I like my sisters big-girl food better than my puppy food.
  • My back yard is really big!
  • This having to work is not near as bad as I thought it would be.
  • I love having my photo taken – good thing since it happens every five minutes
  • Size matters!

My favorite TV show is Dogs In The City (CBS, Wednesday’s 8PM, EST). It takes place in New York City and who knew dogs came in so many shapes and sizes. I don’t know much at this age, but I can tell you one thing for sure – New Yorker’s have no concept of what size dog to get for the space they live in. Continue reading

So This Is Coco

So this is cousin Coco.  Humm, looks promising in the play-with-me-department.  But for right now he is in big trouble – after all that is one of my beds he is lounging in.

Oddest thing, this morning we went outside together and he does things so differently than I do. I squat and he, well you know that “thing” big  guys do. But what the hey, I decided to give it a try.  Not having much life experience at this point and it being a new adventure and all, I put my head down to watch. Continue reading

Siri Is In The House

Time to get up again. Today my cousin Coco is coming for the day. Gee, I wonder how he will react to the fact that Siri has arrived and is one small fur ball of energy (and a bit self absorbed)?  Gee Mom is actually awake this morning, she must be getting used to my schedule. Continue reading

Sir Titan – My Forever Home

siri-baby, Sir Titan, Holly Ralston OylerWe are on our way to my new forever home. I’m so excited. I wonder what it will be like?  My head is spinning just listening to Mommy and Daddy talking. Something about my new sister Princess. Great, another sister, just what I need. Then there is a cousin named Coco that seems to stay with them a lot. Wonder what he is like? Hey, maybe we are related in some way since I am part poodle and is is a poodle. That would be way cool. Wonder what color his fur is. Mine is a bright golden apricot beige with a bit of white, okay a lot of white. In fact, I seem to have a white bib – which is kind of a joke for a puppy. Hope they don’t think it will stay white for very long Continue reading
